Many of you in our community have either heard of or personally know Sgt. Eric Flowers of the IRC Sheriff's Office. Eric has worked in numerous departments while with IRCSO, including as an undercover drug agent!
As IRCSO Public Information Officer, he has his hands full for sure, but he always makes time for special projects that mean something to him. Take for example how he leads a group of Vero Beach Elementary School students and their parents one Wednesday morning each month from the Boys & Girls Club of IRC, where they meet, all the way to VBE.
The idea for the walk started as a national effort through the National Walk to School Day, but Coach Jim Batory and Trudy Ward who are teachers are Vero Beach Elementary School decided to turn this into a weekly event!
On February 4, I tagged along and photographed the walk. I got some exercise, fresh air, made new friends, and started my day on a real high which lasted all day. I also created a "teachable moment" when I jay-walked trying to get a special photo! The kids really let me have it. I told them everyone makes mistakes but the important thing is to learn from them and change our behavior!
If you are in the area next Wednesday morning, see if you can see them walking to school!

I am an official, fully vetted volunteer with the Indian River County Sheriff's Office (Citizen's Academy, background checks, fingerprinted, etc.). Since my expertise is photo-journalism, producing these stories is one way I give back to my community.
